Portugal 1-1 DR Congo: João Neves stuns early, Wissa equalizes deep in stoppage time

In Group K's opening match of the 2026 World Cup, Portugal took an early lead through João Neves in the 6th minute, but DR Congo equalized deep into first-half stoppage time via Yoane Wissa, resulting in a 1-1 draw.

On June 18, 2026, at NRG Stadium in Houston, Group K of the World Cup kicked off with a clash between Portugal and DR Congo. The match ended in a 1-1 draw, denying Portugal the desired winning start.

Portugal took a dream lead just six minutes in. Pedro Neto provided the assist, and João Neves calmly slotted home from inside the box to make it 1-0. It was Neves' third international goal and his first in a World Cup.

After taking the lead, Portugal dominated possession, holding over 75% of the ball, but struggled to break down DR Congo's compact 5-3-2 defensive shape. Deep into first-half stoppage time (45+5'), DR Congo struck on the counter: Arthur Masuaku delivered a cross from the left, and Yoane Wissa arrived at the far post to equalize.

In the second half, Portugal continued to control the game but could not find a way past DR Congo's resolute defense. Despite recording no saves, the DR Congo backline blocked numerous shots and held firm. The match finished 1-1.

Statistically, Portugal had 75% possession, completed 783 passes with 92% accuracy, but managed only 7 total shots (1 on target). DR Congo, with just 25% possession, had 8 shots (2 on target) and a higher expected goals (xG) of 0.82 compared to Portugal's 0.69. Portugal led corners 5-4, fouls 9-10, and yellow cards 3-1.

The player of the match was Portugal's João Neves. The 21-year-old Benfica midfielder was energetic throughout, scoring the opening goal, providing one key pass, and completing 89 passes. He earned a rating of 8.0. Neves, born in Tavira, Portugal, stands 174 cm tall and is considered the future of Portugal's midfield.

After the first round of Group K, Portugal and DR Congo are tied on 1 point each with a goal difference of 0, sitting first and second. Uzbekistan and Colombia have yet to play.

For Portugal, the draw is a setback as they aimed for three points. They will face Uzbekistan on June 24 in a crucial match. DR Congo will take on Colombia the same day, also needing points.

Portugal must improve their attacking efficiency, while DR Congo have shown defensive resilience. The group remains wide open.
