Netherlands 5-1 Sweden: Gakpo Double Fires Oranje to Dominant Win

The Netherlands thrashed Sweden 5-1 in Houston, with Cody Gakpo scoring twice. Oranje sit second in Group F on goal difference.

The Netherlands produced a stunning attacking display to thrash Sweden 5-1 at NRG Stadium in Houston, with Cody Gakpo scoring twice.

The Oranje took the lead after just eight minutes. Memphis Depay crossed from the left, and Cody Gakpo arrived at the back post to slot home.

In the 23rd minute, Denzel Dumfries crossed from the right, Wout Weghorst headed down, and Davy Klaassen volleyed in to make it 2-0.

Sweden pulled one back in the 35th minute when Alexander Isak fired a long-range shot that deflected off a Dutch defender and into the net.

But the Netherlands restored their two-goal lead before halftime. In the 41st minute, Frenkie de Jong played a through ball to Gakpo, who rounded the keeper and scored his second.

The second half continued in the same vein. Donyell Malen cut in from the right and scored with a left-footed shot in the 58th minute, and substitute Joshua Zirkzee headed home in the 74th minute to complete the rout.

The result leaves the Netherlands with four points from two matches, second in Group F on goal difference behind Japan. Sweden have three points.
